Have I got a deal for you!  This book is $15.95 in the printed edition on Amazon and $6.99 in the Kindle edition.  You, my friend, can get it from me for free.

In One Year Lived by Adam Shepard (no relation)  you will meet a young man who has crammed into one year:  around the world travel with fantastic adventure, fulfilling his sophomoric bucket list, helping with volunteer projects, meeting and marrying the woman of his dreams, personal enrichment and gathering material for a career of writing and speaking.  It is told in a young, casual style as if he were telling a funny story to friends at a local watering hole.

I recommend this book for the same reason that I publish personalized travel guides:  not so the reader can repeat the same journey, rather to serve as a stimulus to chose your own course and pursue it with confidence you can leap over, or at least get around, the inevitable hurdles.

To receive your free PDF just comment on this post as to why you are interested in reading this book --and include your email address or email to me:  paroshep at gmail    Or if you would prefer to contribute to Adam and to me buy the book from Amazon.

Lately I am seeing more and more on the world-wide web about being local.  For me this started because I greatly enjoyed the local food on Paros--the eggs were heavenly.  I have written often about the benefits of eating locally.

Now I think the economic slow down around the world has encouraged "buy local" movements.  Paros people, I know, are pulling together as never before.  Well, how about travel local?  Yes, a new internet concept has debued in Athens with the web site www.Dopios.com and is spreading to other major cities.

Their services include:

  • Customized Experiences and Tours by Locals
  • Traditional Dinner with Local
  • Casual Meetups with General Location Overview
  • General Advice about your Destination
At this writing they have 69 locals listed under Athens and are looking for more.  Many offer walking tours and special dinners but my favourite is by Evita:  A Day with my Greek Family (€40)
We will spent the day in my hometown close to Athens (1 hour away) we will be next to the beach having cold drinks and enjoying the sun just 5 minutes away from my family's place! The name of the city is Kiato! My hometown offers a very bebautiful and breathtaking view to the sea and from the other side to some high mountains very close to it! There are also some very original villages that we can have our lunch and return to my place for a traditional Greek dinner made my mother!!!

Or if you are the type who wants to find the late night action try Enjoy Nightlife in Athens with Kostis.

Perhaps browse their site for good ideas and then think about doing the same on Paros.
Enjoy!

yachts I have a page on my web site full of ideas of how to work at home on the beach.  Forbes Magazine highlighted a new way to finance the holiday/vacation life style:  buy a yacht using Time Shares.  Their article details how one person did it but the idea can be applied to anything, including a private villa on Paros with you as the paid caretaker.

What do you want out of life?  Do it better on Paros.

BeachRepairOne can tell where our Piso Aliki beach at the south end of Paros ranks in the scheme of things when it is August before the maintenance crews and their equipment arrive.

Though I must say that the village street cleaners do clean it regularly starting in May.

We are not sure what the purpose of this machine is but there does seem to be more sand and less rock above the water line than before.

ClubMedPerhaps they were getting ready for the visit of the Club Med ship.  Early Wednesday morning Karin was sitting on our veranda reading.  Then she went inside to prepare her breakfast.  When she came back out to eat it she was surprised by this view.

If she hadn’t seen it in previous years she would have thought it was plunked down by a time machine as there was no sight or sound beforehand.  Again it looms much larger than the photo indicates.

Like really young!  Then the following will appeal to you.  It is an offering from the IOS PASS.

slammer IF YOU MISS IT.....4 SHURE YOU REGRET IT FOREVER. SLAMMER BAR..... THE 1 AND ONLY..... THE MOST FAMOUS BAR IN THE CENTER OF THE VILLAGE. TRY THE REAL SLAMMER AND GET READY TO PARTY.

Or how about the epitome of Ios:

faroutbeach-club THE PARTY PLACE AT MYLOPOTAS BEACH. GROOVY....COOL....FUNKY.... NEVER MISS THE WET T-SHIRT CONTEST. FOR SHURE YOU´LL FIND THE BEST LOOKING T-SHIRTS ALL OVER THE WORLD. NO FAR OUT - NO IOS!

In my opinion Ios is for the under 25 crowd to burn them selves out in a few nights and then come to Paros to recuperate.  We have something for everyone—including wild jam-packed beach bars and all night night clubs—but on Paros there is more.  Browse our web site to see what.

P.S.  The Ios Pass is another example of someone being creative to support their Greek island lifestyle.  More ideas here.

I just won a bottle of my favourite Scotch from BloggersBase.  Well they said $40, but to me $40 of found money means a bottle of Macallan.

Join BloggersBase"BloggersBase is a citizen journalism magazine powered by YOU!"  In other words a magazine like format in which bloggers and readers vote on articles and posts--and, of course, win prizes.

It is new and has some growing to do, but I like it.  Check it out by clicking the banner, then we both win.

Cheers,

We are slowly getting into the season this year; a little on line shopping and a few community events. The Christmas lights started appearing last week; I hope to get mine up this week.

As I have mentioned before many Paros expats are artisans of one kind or another and most are always looking for ways to support their Greek island life style. So through out the year there will be art and handicraft sales.

This particular one was set at the Aqua Marine taverna here in Aliki. The spirit was quite festive. Denny, the chef/owner, made a special onion and cheese soup. Being Belgian he did not call it French Onion.

This photo didn't turn out well but I do want to show the setting of this Aliki taverna on the harbour.

Sunday evening was warm and calm so we drove our scooters into Parikia for the annual tree lighting. It is quite the cultural event with the whole town turning out.
Our highlight was the live creche. It was very symbolic; the angel was being angelic, Mary was being accommodating and the wise men were wrestling.
Do notice the live sheep in the background.

New Scientist magazine would have you believe a beach bum has come up with a hot new candidate for The Theory of Everything. They emphasize that Garrett Lisi spends much of the year surfboarding in Hawaii and snowboarding at Lake Tahoe, California and play down that he has a PhD in Physics and several published articles on "quantum field theory within a geometric framework"--the new theory that has the scientific community buzzing.

He does list his "Other Interests" as: Surfing, Snowboarding, Rock Climbing, Hang Gliding, Windsurfing, and Go.

All I know is that I am going to add his story to my web site page about earning a living from the beach.

The last couple posts have been shy of photos so please scroll down if that is what you are looking for.

P.S. I found a fun widget that gives the Greek Orthodox Name Day for each day of the year. Check it out on the Fun Facts page. (See tab above)
