In my opinion Ios is for the under 25 crowd to burn them selves out in a few nights and then come to Paros to recuperate. We have something for everyone—including wild jam-packed beach bars and all night night clubs—but on Paros there is more. Browse our web site to see what.
P.S. The Ios Pass is another example of someone being creative to support their Greek island lifestyle. More ideas here.

It is now Eurovision season—one of our annual highlights. Last year’s post contains some background so please go here if you are not familiar with this European Song Contest. It is nothing like American shows such as American Idol.
http://parosparadise.blogspot.com/2008/05/expat-life-eurovision.html
This year’s broadcast comes from Moscow, which was last year’s winner. The first round of preliminaries was Tuesday, the second round tonight, Thursday and the finals on Saturday.
We find it quite interesting that Turkey and Norway are running neck and neck with Greece a distant third. Last years 100% telephone voting was extremely disgusting because of fans voting for their neighbours instead of the music. So this year 50% of the votes come from a panel of judges.
We look forward a thrilling finale!
Update: Alexander Rybak charmed the viewing universe and won by the greatest margin ever. Norway was not our favourite; we liked both Iceland who came in second and Azerbaijan who placed third. It was gratifying to see results based upon merit although regional voting was still noticeable.
This post is a little off topic. One of the things that Karin misses on our little island is a second hand shop or charity shop as they are known in the U.K. One of our usual stops when we go to Athens is the extensive flea market at Monistiraki.
The best shops in the USA for used merchandise are called Goodwill. They now have extensive new and used products that you can browse online. Unfortunately they only ship within the USA, but shipping costs are a flat rate, so quite reasonable if you choose more than one item.
Take a look; its fun!

I recently subscribed to a service that links reporters and sources. I thought I would post this one and see what happens. If you can comment, please do. Or email to be placed in contact with the reporter.
"I'm working on a story for TechNewsWorld about Skype's new mobile
VoIP application. I'm looking for someone who can discuss the
mobile VoIP market in a general way - what apps are available, what
services (and quality) can people expect, who are the major
players."

New Scientist magazine would have you believe a beach bum has come up with a hot new candidate for The Theory of Everything. They emphasize that Garrett Lisi spends much of the year surfboarding in Hawaii and snowboarding at Lake Tahoe, California and play down that he has a PhD in Physics and several published articles on "quantum field theory within a geometric framework"--the new theory that has the scientific community buzzing.
He does list his "Other Interests" as: Surfing, Snowboarding, Rock Climbing, Hang Gliding, Windsurfing, and Go.
All I know is that I am going to add his story to my web site page about earning a living from the beach.
The last couple posts have been shy of photos so please scroll down if that is what you are looking for.
P.S. I found a fun widget that gives the Greek Orthodox Name Day for each day of the year. Check it out on the Fun Facts page. (See tab above)

Crossroads of Continents, Cultures, Religions... Magnificent Country, Türkiye! Travel to Turkey
I have just now followed up. I am quite impressed what a good job he is doing of showing Turkey--the modern and the ancient.
I have put a permanent link on the side bar. Many people combine trips to Greece and Turkey. Karin and I hope to visit Ephesus soon.
Check out his current post on Istanbul is the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2010
If you could choose a modern list of Seven Wonders of the World, would you choose ancient buildings? I would be more inclined towards the Jumeirah Hotel in Dubai, one of the fantastic new bridges being built around the world or maybe a nuclear submarine. That is, something relatively modern!
I just discovered a new campaign that caught my attention because my birthday is July 7th and next year it will be 7/7/7. That is the date the New 7 Wonders campaign will announce the result of world wide voting. Below are the 21 finalists. You can vote for 7 of these at http://www.new7wonders.com/index.php
I suppose it would be good for business in Greece if the Acropolis won.

I am short on quick and easy blog material right now. ( I do have a long list of detailed, informative articles to write.) So I will mention a recent enquiry that we received.
Hi Michael and Karin
I have just been reading your newsletters on the Paros Paradise website about your life out there which sounds amazing. As you are obviously in touch with a lot of people on the island i was wondering if you would be able to help me. I am currently working on a programme for ITV about British Expats living in Greece. We are looking for expats that are perhaps feeling a little homesick and are now thinking about coming home to the UK. With your contacts we thought that perhaps you might know of how we could get the word out that we're looking or even that you might know people in this situation. Any help or suggestions you might have would be really appreciated. I look forwards to hearing from you. Best Wishes Ami

Actually, this programme came up at dinner the other night with some of our Brit friends. They mentioned it as a possible way for someone to get a free trip home for a visit. We lamented the negative slant of such shows that we had seen in the past. They tend to highlight all the problems and pass over the joys of living in a foreign culture. We had a good laugh that everyone we know on Paros is too happy to qualify for a TV feature.
